On Feb. 2, Lionsgate announced two pieces of welcome news for fans looking forward to Gary Ross’ “The Hunger Games,” the first movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of dystopian novels. Not only is there a new trailer to watch, but “The Hunger Games” will enjoy a limited run at IMAX theaters.
The movie will be digitally re-mastered for its one-week run in IMAX, beginning the same day as its North America release date of March 23, 2012.
“With this news, the release of ‘The Hunger Games’ has truly become an epic event,” said Lionsgate’s Joe Drake in a press statement.
The IMAX announcement is yet another demonstration of how Lionsgate has invested in “The Hunger Games.” The studio’s commitment to the franchise, including moving ahead with “Catching Fire” prior to the first film’s release, banks on the first movie becoming a blockbuster that attracts the built-in fan base of the best-selling novels.

The film’s screening on IMAX will also provide an even-more immersive experience for the story, which focuses on the nation of Panem and its annual televised Hunger Games. In these games, pairs of young “Tributes” are sent from each of the 12 Districts to fight one another to the death.
At the center of the story is the fight of District 12’s Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). She struggles to survive the Games with not only with her life intact, but with her humanity. She is aided by, among others, her fellow Tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and mentor Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson).
This latest trailer also provides a stronger sense of what’s at stake for Katniss in the Games and Districts, as well as for Peeta. As with “The Hunger Games” trailer previously released, Thursday’s teaser offers a look at this plot and at Katniss’ motivation for participating in the Games – but adds hints as to what Katniess’ participation means for all of Panem.
