Yeah, yeah, yeah the 49ers didn’t quite make it… but YOU still can, before it is too late. Pastime Pool Hall/Bar in Pleasanton is shutting down after nearly 40 years of servin’ up suds. What was once a card room with games of draw poker, lowball, cigars, bets and booze is getting pushed out by lease renewals, town ordinances, and other mumbo jumbo that squashes the little man. Or woman. It is what it is, and it’s over in a few months.
Pastime Pool (511 MAIN) has seen a lot in downtown Pleasanton. It started as The Gem Theater in the early 1900’s, becoming the New Lincoln Theater by 1910. Dressed to the 9’s, Americans came to witness the silent movie era. Evolving into a bar by the 40’s, the men from Parks Air Force Base would grab a stool and let off steam. As the 70’s rolled in, Jackie Shenave and “silent partner” took over with more cold beer, billiards, video games and darts. It was and remains a “Cheers” like atmosphere, and yes, everybody will know your name. On any given day you’ll find Silent Partner, Jackie, Jeanne, Frankie, Kim, Matt, Steve, Santa, Elmo, Sexy Laverne, and the famous John Ritter. Great folk all soon to be… homeless.
For any ghost hunters the building is haunted by an amazing lady, Arlene Voudry. She bartended in her 80’s, and remains 100 for quite some time now… making guest bartender appearances and checkin’ up on friends & family. Don’t even try to put one over on that lady. You will lose. She will never leave Pastime, whatever the future brings.
If there is a favorite past time of Americans, Super Bowl Sunday is in the top three. Pastime is hosting a pot-luck barbecue with burgers, dogs, salads and whatever you would like to contribute. Come one and come all, enjoy the big game and pay homage to a landmark, a piece of history which is just that… history.
Cheers and love to the whole gang there. A kind hearted group that is soon to be displaced. And replaced. It’s a disgrace.
“There is bar time… and there is real time!” Whatever time you keep, don’t arrive late and don’t depart early. Play pool, hang amongst friends, relax… And tip your bartenders please! Tell them Joe sent you. Or actually, keep your mouth shut about me.
