They say things happens and threes, and the adventure travel opportunities this weekend in Chicago prove it. For those sad there is no skiing, there will be at least something to do this weekend. The Chicago Travel & Adventure Show kicks off in Rosemont, Illinois, the Eagle Days weekend in Starved Rock State Park, and the Norge Ski Jump in Fox River Grove rounds out a busy adventure travel weekend.
The Chicago Travel & Adventure Show-
Features booths from around the world and around the country to help promote and inspire travel. There is way more to the Travel & Adventure Show than a bunch of booths as they have world class speakers, presentations on different countries and destinations, and dancing and artists performing from around the world. On top of this, they also have camel rides and a scuba tank.

Starved Rock State Park Eagle Days –
This year may not be a bounty for seeing eagles, but the event at Starved Rock is always a fun and informative good time. Eagles usually converge on the Starved Rock Dam when it is cold as it is the only open water in the area. Eagle’s main diet is fish and the open water at the dam gives them an opportunity to fish year long. With this year’s unusual warm temperatures, the eagles will most likely not congregrate at the dam and the viewing places at Starved Rock. Eagles will most likely be around, but not in the numbers when it is cold.

It does not matter though as seeing actual eagles is only part of the festival. There are booths at the Starved Rock Lodge from other local adventure places like Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie as well as seminars. The Raptor awareness seminar by the World Bird Sanctuary is an awesome must see presentation. Also, Sam the bald eagle is always on hand to take a picture, and I know first hand the bird likes hugs.
Starved Rock is also a great place for a hike. If the eagles are not present, the pleasant weather is a great time to hike the Starved Rock trails and check out the waterfalls.

Norge Ski Jump –
The Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove hosts a great ski jump competition. I witnessed the U.S. Nationals in fall and that was really cool, but ski jumping is best when there is snow, whether real or man-made. The jump competition is a fun time to have a few drinks and see athletes defy gravity in a scenic environment. Check out the slide show for the fall competition pictures.
