When you think of producer Gale Anne Hurd’s career you think of films like The Terminator, Aliens, T2 and The Incredible Hulk and even her latest TV hit, The Walking Dead. So when she recently told WIRED Magazine that she’s developing a new TV series about pirates, everyone kinda went huh?
Hurd has discovered that she has a newfound love for TV (probably given to the tremendous success of The Walking Dead) and for pirates, telling the magazine that “…the switch from sci-fi to pirates isn’t weird at all.” In fact she went on to explain that although she’s always been a fan of sci-fi, fantasy and horror— I like working with larger- than- life characters in fascinating worlds—places where the rules are different.” The world of pirates are not so different from those worlds, she said.
To Ms. Hurd, pirate ships were like a spaceship, in a way, and “a bit sci-fiie”— Think of the Enterprise or the Galactica. They (pirate ships) had all races and religions serving aboard, sometimes even women and they traveled to exotic ports of call and to uncharted areas. Change the dates from the future to the past and instead of a spaceship yo have a pirate ship.
Hurd’s new series is called Port Royal and will debut next fall on FX. So if you liked her movies and you like The Walking Dead, it’s a good bet you’ll like Port Royal— at least that’s what Ms. Hurd his counting on.
So will you make Port Royal your port of call or sail on? Please let us know.
