February is approaching! You know what that means. It means don’t forget your sweat heart. No, not your sweatheart . . . your sweet HEART. In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson declared February American Heart Health Month. What fabulous timing. Not only do we have that annual holiday of Valentines with the heart shaped emblem to remind us, but we also have the colors red and pink that go with that symbol. If you are like most people, the resolutions you made on New Years are starting to wane a little and you are more interested in the pizza, wings and chips being served on SuperBowl Sunday.
What a wonderful opportunity to be reminded that our resolutions to health are not a once a year commitment that disappear faster than the bottle of vitamins you bought for the month. Friday, February 3 is National Wear Red day. Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women. More women die of heart disease than all cancers put together. Wear red on Friday, February 3, to increase awareness. Additionally, use the month of February to increase the number of foods you eat that are red. Adding healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet decreases your risk of heart disease. Strawberries, apples, pomegranite, beets, tomatoes, red peppers, cherries, raspberries, grapes, chili peppers, and cranberries are all packed with beneficial antioxidants, lycopene and beta carotene. When we see red we think of rage, passion and fire, all of which increase your heart rate. Use this as a reminder to get a few minutes of cardiovascular exercise in most days of the week. This could be as simple as a walk during your lunch hour or taking a couple flights of starts instead of using the elevator.
Increasing your fruit and vegetable intake and increasing your heart rate through regular exercise will improve your circulation and bring a healthy pink glow to your skin. Look around your community, your work place, neighborhood and church for others who may benefit from having someone to walk with for a couple minutes every day. It may just be the best gift you ever gave yourself and them.
Spread the love, wear the red and you will feel in the pink by the end of the month.
