This holiday weekend at the box office saw the continued success of last weekend’s top movies and the floundering of some not-so-well-received new releases. “Safe House”, the thriller starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, was the number two movie last weekend, but it pulled ahead of last weekend’s number one movie, the romantic drama “The Vow”, this weekend to be on top. It grossed $24 million, but “The Vow” wasn’t far behind with $23.6 million; in fact, it would not be surprising if by the end of the holiday weekend, “The Vow” jumps back in the lead.
Out of this weekend’s new releases, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, the long-put-off sequel to the 2007 film based on the comic book hero, was the most successful. Featuring the return of Nicolas Cage as the fiery protagonist, “Ghost Rider” came in third at the box office with $22 million. “This Means War”, the part action flick/part romantic comedy movie starring Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon, debuted in fifth with $17.5. Meanwhile, the U.S. debut of Studio Ghibli’s latest anime feature, “The Secret World of Arrietty”, was a moderate success. That movie debuted in ninth with $6.4 million.
