As a long time runner and professional coach I run into the same questions many times. They are great questions because they indicate that people are trying to learn and train with knowledge, not just follow the pack blindly.
Here is a common question:
I was wondering…What exactly is fitness walking, power walking, or tempo walking?
Good question and there are long and short answers so let’s start with a short one.
Walking is something almost all of us can do and ranges from a stroll along the beach, hiking in the hills, to race walkers competing in the Olympics. In a fitness context it has to be a bit better defined. The distinction between WALKING and FITNESS WALKING/TEMPO WALKING is mine and has to do with walking at a pace that will make you sweat!
I can walk forever but I can’t run far at all.
Sound familiar? This is the crux of the subject right here. If you are working up a sweat when you walk, you are fitness walking. It takes intensity to improve. Sweating proves that you are working hard! Working hard doesn’t require running. Working hard requires intensity. Intensity will bring out the sweat.
Walkers can work hard if they understand and apply this. Most of the time, if people say they can walk forever, they are not walking hard, not fitness walking, not working up a sweat.
Want to improve? Walk to sweat, for starters.
