To achieve the perfect red carpet look, it needs to be flawless from head-to-toe. The fit should be perfect in movement on camera as well as photographs. The colors of the gown, accessories, hair, skin, and make-up should work well together. Celebrities spend months preparing for awards season and every year some get it right and unfortunately others fall short.
For the 2012 Oscars, the must see look was Jennifer Lopez. She opted for a glimmer, plunging Zuhair Murad gown complete with shoulder cutouts, stripes, and a mini train which gave the illusion of sheerness. Her stylist noted special built-in cups feature that prevented any wardrobe malfunctions. One of the reasons this look is so successful is because of the fit. It perfectly accentuated her curves. The color was also a good choice for her skin tone. She accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz platinum-and-diamond earrings and rings, a Salvatore Ferragamo mirrored clutch, and Jimmy Choo sandals. Her hair and makeup complimented the dress nicely. She wore a neat doughnut style bun and matte golden-brown eye shadow with shimmering peach lips. Keeping her hair and makeup simple put the attention back to the dress!
The worst dressed would be Sandra Bullock. This is very surprising since she typically is a red carpet pro! Sandra wore an embellished, black-and-white Marchesa gown with intricate gold detailing. It was loosely fitted and white at the top with a plunging back, gold embellishment details at the waist and shoulders, and a form-fitting black bottom. Her hair was pulled in a high ponytail and accessorized with diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwarz and a simple clutch. For makeup, she wore a palette of chocolate grey, violet, and pink with a chocolate-red lip. Her makeup was executed perfectly however her biggest and most unforgiving mistake was the poor fit! From the front, the top half of the dress fit like an old sweatshirt which made the form fitting bottom and train make her thighs look bigger and as though she had to squeeze into it by rubbing cooking oil onto herself. The angle from the back shows a nice dress. However since she did not walk onto the red carpet backwards, it was difficult to notice or remember. It is like a movie which the first 30 minutes is awful. Although the ending might be good, people have already started to leave the theater.
Many worst dressed contenders can be viewed as martyrs for the fashion risk takers of the world, however there is something to the “if it ain’t broke” approach. Just like the awards shows themselves there are red carpet winners and losers and with the conclusion of awards season, accolades to all the red carpet divas. JLo knows her body and did a great job executing a look that has landed her on many best dressed lists for years. Here is hoping that she will continue to impress and that the ones who have fallen short in 2012 will learn from their mistakes in 2013.
