When choosing a dog, there are so many breeds, sizes and varieties. It has been said that we choose pets to match our personalities and I wonder how true that may be. Some people just love the larger dogs while others prefer something tiny they can hold and cuddle. How about guys? What kinds of dogs do most men prefer? Is the choice of dog they prefer a reflection of themselves? I have known some manly men who have a less-than-manly pooch such as a Chihuahua or Yorkshire terrier. Does this make him bad? Certainly not! If you are looking for the perfect pet in the Rockford area, or closest to your home, visit the Winnebago Humane Society or other rescue sites as listed below.
Single guys may choose a cute dog to use as a “babe magnet” and many ladies know it can work. If you are an animal lover, you always react to the sight of a dog or kitty – among other animals. I know I do. Some guys know this as well and love prancing with their favorite canine friends. Many will frequent dog parks to meet ladies. At least it is nice to know they are best of friends and all pups deserve a best friend.
Although not always true, some breeds do express the personality of their owners and a man who loves the herding breed of dog may be fun-loving, intelligent and goal-oriented. Some of the herding breeds of dogs are the Australian Shepherd, Border collie, Collie, German shepherd and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Many men who favor one of these breeds is said to be an outdoorsy type person.
Hound dogs are a favorite with many men as well, and some of these breeds are known as the Afghan hound, Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound and the Dachshund. A hound dog owner is more laid back, and appreciates a dog and a lifestyle of the same.
Bulldog, Poodle, Chow, Dalmatian and the Chinese Shar-Pei are known as nonsporting breeds that are very dedicated to their owners, with unique personalities. Their owners reflect the demeanor of these breeds with their own unique personalities. There is a very strong bond between owner and dog.
Sporting dogs are very popular with many people, including men, such as the Brittany, Irish setter, German shorthaired pointer, Golden Retriever and Labrador retriever. There’s a very strong bond between the man and his sporting dog, which are both very happy-go-lucky and carefree. What a great combination!
These terrier dogs such as the Boston Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier and Scottish Terrier are a favorite with a man who favors a feisty, clever, “I have a mind of my own” type dog. Obviously this guy doesn’t mind disorder and noise in his life.
How about the toy breeds? What type of a guy likes the Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, Maltese, Pomeranian and the Pug? The type of guy that favors a small dog is a real down to earth, hard-working, caring type of guy who has no problem cuddling, has a strong bond and a good heart.
Akita, Boxer, Doberman, Rottweiler and the Siberian husky are in the working dog category, and their owners most often are very hard workers with a huge ego. As they bond together, they look for the same types of characters in their lives and home.
A person who has a huge heart in taking in a mutt-type dog is just that, a very caring person. This goodhearted person can sometimes take on the weight of the world and be very generous with his time. Just be cautious with this type of person who has multiple dogs as it could be a real addiction. It is great to be an animal lover and want to rescue all of them; however, such a need could quickly turn into an obsession, putting the health of each animal in jeopardy.
It is difficult to know what the best breed is for any particular individual and what those breeds say about those people. At least we would like to think that any dog owner with the right intentions has a good heart and a good bond with that loving pet that depends on him.
