“Primetime: What Would You Do?” is a Candid Camera style series that asks viewers whether they would intervene when they see questionable behavior. Using hidden cameras, “What Would You Do?,” hosted by John Quiones, establishes everyday scenarios and then captures people’s reactions in situations that challenge ethics.
ABC has released information about the scenarios for the episode airing on Friday, January 27, 2012 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on ABC. Scenarios include a man attempting to lure young girls by promising a modeling career; a gay marriage proposal in a restaurant; a couple adopting a pit bull for the purpose of dog fighting; and a laptop thief in a cafe. When people see a questionable situation, do they step in, back away, or just walk on by?
So You Want to be a Model?: Young girls often dream of a career in modeling, so the promise of a modeling career can be tempting. Two beautiful teens are in a cafe when a man approaches them and offers to make them famous, luring them into his home studio to take photographs. The man steps away, giving onlookers a chance to warn the girls to be careful of strangers bearing lofty promises. Will anyone step in and advise the teenagers that they should be careful?
Gay Marriage Proposal: A man proposes to his boyfriend at a restaurant and one of the diners is vocal about his disgust. Will onlookers defend the newly engaged gay couple?
Doggie Adoption: A couple are in a pet store to adopt a rescued pit bull. When the pet store employee steps away, they reveal that they want to use the dog in underground dog fights. Will anyone step in to intervene on behalf of the dog?
Laptop Thief: A man leaves his laptop on a cafe table and asks other patrons to watch it for him. Will anyone intervene when someone steals the laptop? What if the laptop owner is an obnoxious businessman?
“Primetime: What Would You Do?” has won awards from the Chicago International Television Festival, and the Avon Foundation’s 2006 Voice of Change award for exposing “injustice and wrongdoing against women and bringing the message of domestic violence to the mainstream.” The Columbia Journalism Review has called the program “a Candid Camera of Ethics.”
