By now you know the name Jan Brewer. You may not know the title of her book ‘Scorpions for Breakfast’ but you know the name Jan Brewer. You may know little about what was at the center of the verbal skirmish that occured on that Arizona tarmac, but you undoubtedly know the name Jan Brewer. Ironically, she is the governor of Arizona, the LAST state to recognize MLK as a paid holiday for state employees.
What most citizens in this country know is that President Barack Obama is one of the most underrespected(by his own constituent) leaders of the free world! There are many who simply disagree with him as a person and even as a leader but thank God for enough proper up-bringing, they still respect the office of The President of the United States.
Quickly getting to the point…studying the picture a few times I noticed a “look” on the President’s face that looked all too familiar. It was the same look and tone of exasperation shown on the face of the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King. While I will stop immediately short of actually lumping the two together, I will point to the disparity that yet remains in our country. Of course, Dr. King led with a Christian philosophy and even employed the non violent method of protest he adopted from Mahatma Ghandi.
Looking today at the current POTUS, I see that those struggles of the 50’s and 60s’ have come full circle! While one may wonder if Dr. King would have made some of the advancements for the homosexual community as President Obama has given the moral conflict it presents, it is clear that Dr. King would speak to us on similar issues the President has.
So, what if(for good measure) we post-humously award Dr. King the Presidency of these United States. Would he be more respected than President Obama? Would the church community expect more from him in the oval office than they ever did in the pulpit? What about issues like immigration which caused the altercation and rebuke?
The answer sadly is a resounding NO!
No because as celebrated as President Obama is, he is torn down. Seldom judged by the content of his character; his character assasinated as often as stories go to press and red lights in TV studios come on. One man’s dream for this country and another’s vision have made(King) and is making a martyr(Obama) of two of this country’s greatest men!
The church has a challenge. Pray! If you don’t want to see this President cut down,PRAY! Don’t let racism win. Don’t let partisanship win. Don’t let evil win. The US is a country that enjoys and offers freedoms unparalleled the world over. One freedom democracy affords is the freedom to wantonly strip away respect. Tear away at the fiber of another human being. And most flippantly, to discard at will the troven authority that comes with the highest office in America. Those are NOT the freedoms Dr. King dreamed would ring in this land!
