In Washington, gay marriage is in the news again today with several Republican legislators having announced they will vote in favor of the measure when it comes up in the current legislative session. Those Republican votes will deliver the bill to Governor Chris Gregoire who promises to sign it when it gets to her desk. That’s big news for the state, but it’s especially big news in oh so conservative Yakima.
Remember that in Yakima even traffic circles are viewed with suspicion. One commenter to the Yakima Herald Republic last year said he thought our new traffic circles “Are an attempt to force European style Socialism on the United States” That is a remarkable idea but in Yakima a lot of remarkable ideas are accepted as common knowledge by the hair on fire crowd.
The news that gay marriage will become law has not only unleashed a torrent of biblically themed damnations, it has prompted Everett attorney and very, very Republican Stephen Pidgeon to declare his candidacy for Attorney General.
Pidgeon combines his considerable legal skills with fundamental religious beliefs to inform his politics. This from Stephen Pidgeon’s campaign website:
Stephen Pidgeon is the founder of DecaLogos International – an organization that advocates for God-given human rights as they are established by the Ten Commandments, and the CEO of BiblePlex.com, an organization that has just recently launched a line of holy scriptures. He is a founder of The Faith Coalition, a group that is now standing for marriage in the State of Washington, a group that supports marriage being defined as between one man and one woman.
He has other opinions too.
The Yakima Herald published an article by Jim Brunner which originally appeared in the Seattle Times. This statement by Mr. Pidgeon ” Pidgeon claimed that Obama, if re-elected, will lock down the U.S. border. “You will not be able to escape this country,” he said. “You will be locked into this country, and you will be under the tyranny of the iron fist of an Islamic caliphate.”
Where the hell do these guys get this stuff? You may ask. That’s a good question with a surprising answer.
David Frum is a noted conservative writer and former White House Special Assistant to George W. Bush. Frum knows Washington politics as well as anyone. He opined for CNN on the Gingrich campaign after Newt won the South Carolina primary.
Frum is generous in heaping criticism on Newt for many reasons. This Gingrich quote is particularly precious and useful in answering the earlier question and the title of this column. Gingrich said this “What if Obama is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together his actions? That is the most accurate predictive model for his behavior. This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happens to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president. I think he worked very hard at being a person who is normal, reasonable, moderate, bi-partisan, transparent, accommodating-none of which is true. He is authentically dishonest.”
Frum says that this is the kind of thinking that will keep Newt Gingrich from ever becoming president.
No wonder Stephen Pidgeon, candidate for attorney general thinks President Obama is about to declare Sharia law as soon as he is re-elected. I’m betting this is the kind of right wing looney tune thinking that will prevent Pidgeon from ever becoming attorney general of progressive Washington state.
It’s not all bad for Pidgeon. If he runs for any office in Yakima he will surely win in a landslide.
