When it comes to your pets, vomiting is not uncommon. There are so many reasons that can cause vomiting, whether it is your pets or your children. Vomiting is a signal of an underlying problem whether it is minor or more serious and should not be overlooked. Some of the reasons may be due to overeating, eating too fast, playing or exercising right after eating, eating something inappropriate or any other non-serious condition. Only your local Rockford area veterinarian listed below or one closest to your home can help you with a definitive diagnosis for acute and chronic vomiting in your dog.
Vomiting is when the contents of the stomach is expelled through the mouth. The central nervous system works together with the abdominal muscles in order to empty the substances of the stomach. An occasional vomiting episode is not uncommon. However, if your dog vomits consistently, this is a symptom of a more serious gastrointestinal problem that needs veterinary attention. Many times this is a symptom to a secondary disease such as cancer, diabetes, kidney disorders and infections.
Vomiting can be acute, meaning it comes on suddenly, or it can be chronic, lasting several weeks. A specific diagnosis from your doctor would be necessary for chronic vomiting since this is a serious problem that needs further medical attention more than the acute vomiting which is occasional, remedying itself. A chronic vomiting problem which signals a serious medical condition will be evident in symptoms of weight loss, dehydration, lethargy, blood in vomit, diarrhea and lack of appetite.
To get to the root of your dog’s problem, your veterinarian will do a complete medical exam along with such tests as a fecal exam, x-rays, a complete blood count, an ultrasound and Laparotomy. And endoscopy may be required in the event that your dog may have swallowed something inappropriate.
Treatment for chronic vomiting depends upon the outcome of the diagnostic test performed. If it is due to a secondary disease or condition, specialized medical treatment may be needed which will resolve the vomiting as well. On a regular basis, some things that you can do to treat and avoid further vomiting, is to limit your dog’s exposure to the trash, poisonous plants, people food or anything that can harm your pet. Any home with a pet should be pet-proof from the moment that dog enters the home in order to evade possible dangerous situations.
A dog that has experienced chronic vomiting may need to be rehydrated with subcutaneous fluids as well as injectable antiemetics. Follow-up with your veterinarian to be sure the problem has been resolved. You will probably be asked to reintroduce food and water slowly until your dog can eat and drink regularly without difficulty. Sometimes a bland diet is required such as the Hills prescription diet or Iams recovery diet, or you can do what I have done and make a home diet which consists of boiled rice and ground meat. Use this diet for a couple of days until the stomach has calmed down and you can gradually return your dog to regular eating.
There is no need to panic when your dog vomits unless it is a continual thing, needing medical attention. Of course the problem is the mess created. Most of us who have raised children and other pets know the process of cleaning the mess – the unconditional love and benefits of that pet far outweighs the occasional medical issues that do arrive.
