It’s been an exciting week for wine lovers in Calgary this week with many visits from winemakers, and unusually, in what is more regularly a man’s world, we’ve enjoyed meeting lots of women winemakers and hearing their stories. This has inspired a new series for Examiner on Women In Wine!
It was a pleasure to meet Silvia Franco of Nino Franco, from Veneto in northeast Italy, who brought her sparkling wines for us to enjoy. Silvia is the fourth generation to work in the business started by her great-grandfather, Antonio Franco. He founded the “Cantine Franco” winery in Valdobbiadene, an hour north of Venice, in 1919, producing a range of Prosecco wines. Silvia’s grandfather, Nino, took over from Antonio and her father Primo has been in charge since 1982, making Nino Franco one of the oldest family vineyards in the area.
Silvia grew up in a family who’s love of art and architecture is not only a hobby, but a way of life, so it was natural choice for her to study Interior Design at university and start a career working in architecture. But the lure of the family vineyards was also strong, so after one year, Silvia joined her father and sister to learn the family business as quickly as possible.
With her mother running the 18th Century Bed and Breakfast, Silvia quickly learned to do all the jobs in the vineyard, completing her first harvest in 2006. She travels a great deal, almost every two weeks, to present her wines and is very involved in the winemaking process.
It was perfect timing for us to try these high-quality, premium sparkling Nino Franco wines with Valentines Day just around the corner!
Rustico Prosecco Superiore DOCG 90 pts Robert Parker Wine Advocate $22.50
The classic wine of the region, Rustico is produced from 100% Glera grapes (often called Prosecco grapes). It is a perfect aperitif, fruitily refreshing and crisp, yet creamy and soft on the palate. It is a lightly sparkling wine, well-balanced between the fresh apple acidity and the gentle yeasty flavours and would be ideal with risotto, pasta, fresh seafood dishes and sushi, or for just sipping on its own before a meal.
Primo Franco Prosecco Superiore DOCG $30
Also produced from 100% Glera, Primo Franco is an absolutely delicious wine made from grapes specially selected from the highest altitude hillside vineyards. It is just off-dry and has a good acidity that gives the wine an elegance and great finesse. It is creamy on the palate with flavours of ripe and sweet fruit that make for a versatile food wine. Primo Franco could pair as easily with spicy dishes, gorgonzola cheese and salads with pear and nuts as it would with cake and fruit tarts for dessert.
Nino Franco prosecco wines are widely available in Calgary, click here to find them at a store near you or another town in Alberta.
