Welcome to year two of Wrestler of the Week. Much like last year this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like last year, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Each week 5 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 3 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 1 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.
Wrestler of the Week
The Japanese journeyman shocked the world this past weekend in Japan when he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship completely out of nowhere. Okada was persona non grata in New Japan just two months ago and so it was a huge surprise to see him end Tanahashi’s record breaking thirteen-month title reign. In fact up until a couple months ago Okada was in America on an overseas excursion with TNA Wrestling. While in TNA he was used sparingly, primarily known as “Okato” the rarely used sidekick of Samoa Joe. So time will tell whether Okada will connect with Japanese audiences and become a true main event player, or whether this reign will flop. But regardless it was truly a historic and surprising victory.
Samoa Joe & Magnus
Speaking of Samoe Joe, he and his new tag team partner Magnus defeated Crimson & Matt Morgan last night at TNA’s Against All Odds pay per view to win the World Tag Team Championships. Both Joe and Magnus were primarily non-factors in TNA in 2011 so this is a huge win for both men in hopes they can both regain credibility and get the exposure they deserve.
Also at Against All Odds, “A Double” had the match of the evening, as he successfully defended his X-Division Championship against Alex Shelley in an absolutely fantastic match. Aries is one of the main bright spots of TNA Wrestling and his long-term reign as X-Division Champion is well deserved.
