Every year when the Royal Rumble comes around, WWE fans speculate about what could happen in the 30-man over-the-top-rope match. It’s no different this year with the Rumble emanating this Sunday on Pay Per View from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. One of the biggest things that fans look forward to every year is counting down to the entrance of the next surprise superstar to enter the match. Almost every year there is a few entrants who are more surprising than others like wrestlers who have been away from WWE with injury or Hall of Famers returning for a feel good moment. Pro Wrestling Examiner now will look at some possible surprise entrants for this Sunday’s Royal Rumble. Read all the latest news about the 2012 Royal Rumble on this page including the latest news and rumors on this page.
The Undertaker is set to soon make a return to WWE for his annual defense of his legendary Wrestlemania streak. The Deadman has not been seen since last year’s Mania when he was carted out of the ring on a stretcher after defeating Triple H. The St. Louis crowd could explode if the lights go out and the bell chimes, ushering the Undertaker to the ring for the Rumble as a surprise entrant. It would be conflicting with the rumored Wrestlemania rematch with Triple H, but seeing ‘Taker laying suckers out in the Rumble match would be impressive.
Christian who really raised his rank in 2011 with World Heavyweight Championship reigns, is almost a guarantee to be an returned from an anke injury at the Scottrade Center on Sunday. Captain Charisma has been complaining about having “one more match” for the World title, what better way to answer that plea with a Rumble win and a Wrestlemania main event title shot. Even if he does not win, expect Christian to make an impact in the Rumble.
The Rock may be on cruise control on the road to Wrestlemania to face John Cena in the match of the decade, but what type of pop would the WWE Universe give if the Great One walked into the ring on Sunday? Dwayne Johnson does not need to win the Rumble to get to Miami and he’s certainly passed the point of a WWE Championship opportunity, yet it would really ramp things up to see him catch everyone off guard. It would be interesting to see if the Rock vs. John Cena match has influence on Cena’s match this Sunday with Kane.
Kevin Nash shocked the Royal Rumble last year with his return to WWE. His chance in the Rumble dance was considered to be highlight from the match. Nash made sporadic cameos in WWE in the last year and ended the year getting brutalized by his former friend Triple H in a Streetfight at TLC in December. Nash joked on Twitter about his participation in this year’s Rumble when he said the following: “Under no circumstances will I be at the Royal Rumble, unless of course, I’m going over. Oh, and I need to be #30.” Big Daddy Cool may have some weaknesses with his extended years in the ring, yet he has shown throw down with the best of them.
Shaquille O’Neal the former NBA great, could be showing up on Sunday at the Rumble. O’Neal a huge WWE fan, has been widely reported to be stepping into the ring for Wrestlemania 28 in Miami to challenge the Big Show. O’Neal got huge attention for WWE when he had a physical confrontation with the Big Show in 2009 on RAW. If Shaq-Diesel shocked the WWE Universe with a proverbial ‘slam dunk’ of an appearance in the Royal Rumble match, it could really excite the mainstream media and build instant momentum for ‘Mania.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan could have the Rumble crowd going “Hooooo!” in an instant if he marched to the ring with his 2×4 in hand. Duggan is rumored to be a part of WWE Legends House, a reality show in production for the upcoming WWE Network. The All-American Hall of Famer is also set to be releasing a biography in the coming months, so raising his profile with fans through a Royal Rumble appearance would be timely.
Rowdy Roddy Piper like Duggan, is said to be attached to the Legends Houst reality show. Piper has made cameos in previous Rumbles, including 2008 when he returned to Madison Square Garden. Piper would garnered a strong reaction as he’s a very respected WWE Hall of Famer. Though Father Time is working against him, Piper could work the match and not have to hustle much in the ring.
CM Punk and Daniel Bryan are allowed to participate this year’s Rumble. Yes, both the WWE and World Champion could compete in the Royal Rumble. It would certainly turn some heads to either one of the top stars in the company to enter the fray of the Rumble. Now if the Rumble goes on last during Sunday’s Pay Per View after the World and WWE Championship matches with a title changing hands, this could make perfect sense. The Big Show, Marc Henry and Dolph Ziggler who are challenging WWE and World Championship, could also join the action.
Triple H is the WWE Chief Operating Officer, but that has not stopped the “King of Kings” from putting his boots on for in ring action. Besides his December match with Kevin Nash, Trips has also squared off CM Punk and then tagged with Punk against Miz and R-Truth.
The 13-time World Champion has also announced intentions to tangle with the Undertaker once again at Wrestlemania in followup to last year’s Match of the Year. On Sunday, WWE could really stir the drink if The Deadman and Cerebral Assassin could have a face off during the Rumble.
Batista could be a be shocking surprise this year. The former WWE Champion left the company in 2009 on the heels of his best run in the company. His post WWE life has included feature films and a failed pursuit into Mixed Mart Arts with Strikeforce. After UFC bought out Strikeforce, the chances of seeing the Animal make the crossover from Pro Wrestling to MMA disappeared. So what is a former Wrestlemania main eventer supposed to do? Dave Bautista has expressed on Twitter that he is content not coming back to WWE and has sited how uncomfortable he is with the “PG-TV” restrictions in the company. Yet it would certainly be a moment to see Batista power bomb some dudes again.
